The Need for Gender Counselling Services

Counselling and therapy are well-established processes for helping individuals deal with and heal many long-term emotional and psychological issues. Whilst there can still be some reluctance about the role of counselling for some people, most health professionals recognise it as a valuable tool for helping a wide range of individuals.

Assuming they have this unconditional acceptance, a gender therapist can help individuals own and acknowledge the conflict that they may feel. Working through something like gender identity disorder is crucial as someone is working through their understanding of their own gender and sexuality. A gender therapist will take into account issues of age and cultural background, and they should give the individual space and time to acknowledge these things. Whilst these do not necessarily determine gender identity issues, they often play an important part in the individual's sense of self-acceptance. When an individual has a genuine acceptance of themselves, they can feel freer to make their own choices and decisions. This can sometimes take a long time and can cause much heartache. The need for some type of gender counselling is often a crucial element in this process.
